Who Am I?

Who am I?  Good question.  I’ve been posting stuff for over a year now and maybe you’ve even been reading it.

If you have been reading it, I hope you found it useful and that it helped you make your business more profitable.

But you know nothing about me except what you can glean from reading between the lines of the stuff I’ve been posting. So, I thought it would make sense to tell you something about myself.

The name should be a giveaway. I’m Irish. I was born and bred in Ireland, got an engineering degree there and promptly left to work for Siemens in West Germany.

After a number of years working in Germany it became clear to me that, because I was not German, I was unlikely to rocket to the top in any major division of Siemens. But I did learn a lot about engineering.

So I came to the US to work for Westinghouse Electrical Corporation in East Pittsburgh, PA.  I learned a lot there about engineering and the use of digital computers to solve engineering problems. At the time I thought the salary they paid me was fantastic compared to what I was earning in Europe.  But it slowly became clear that by US standards they were underpaying me.

However, it was at Westinghouse that my technical writing career began.  I authored or co-authored a number of technical papers and  published them in peer-reviewed industry journals and presented them at industry conferences

Failing to convince my Westinghouse bosses that I was worth more, I moved to Chicago to work for one of the largest engineering consulting firms in the US. As I rose through the ranks my technical writing activities expanded.

In 2001 I decided to start my own forensic engineering company providing consulting services to other engineering companies and industrial concerns and litigation support services to attorneys and insurance companies.

The consulting and litigation support services involved a lot of writing which I like and am good at. So, I decided to expand my business to provide copywriting services to industrial companies – white papers, case studies, web content, brochures and other marketing materials.

So now you’ve got it.  Now you know something about me and why I’m posting stuff on a somewhat regular basis to help you with your copywriting campaigns.

My thinking is that after reading or at least being aware of my stuff you will, when you’re up against a marketing writing deadline, slap your head as you remember me and grab the phone to call for my help.

You won’t regret it.

Warmest Regards

Tom McCauley.
